One crew member of the Titanic stated that God Himself could not sink this ship. In the early morning hours of April 15, 1912, the Titanic sank in the Atlantic Ocean after colliding with an iceberg. This disaster caused the deaths of some 1,500 people. But thank the good Lord, there was a good shepherd on board the Titanic in the person of Fr. Thomas Byles, who helped many avoid spiritual shipwreck by hearing their confessions and granting them absolution. A good shepherd lays down his life for his sheep. Fr. Byles was twice offered a seat on a lifeboat, but he flatly refused. He was willing to expose himself to bodily death in order to preserve his sheep from eternal death. Pope St. Pius X called Fr. Byles a martyr for the Church. Fr. Byles is a witness that Christ, the Good Shepherd, still acts through His bishops and priests today.
